Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The common question asked when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, which stands for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. How the light source is processed from the point when the projector switches on to when the content reaches your screen is extremely significant in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by shining each pixel on and off. The pixels are then simultaneously processed in a glass prism to form the projector image. An important point to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your projector screen simultaneously. The way a DLP projector functions is vastly different and even how an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of projecting an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then combine each coloured element of the image into the complete image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create high brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have added a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness generally, but this goes and degrades colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and therefore must be better quality. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of producing. DLP projectors do have high contrast specifications compared to the majority of LCD projectors. At first glance, this appears to be a plus, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is utilised. Do not be duped by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you want to project needs moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most commonplace artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because all colours are projected with the others. DLP manufacturers have come up with 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up issue, but the price of these projectors make them almost impossible for most businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and remember how different colours of light refract differing amounts when projected through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel and the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light in different ways. Generally with a DLP projector, a superfluous yellow colour will come up above and some blue will show below something as simple as a lone black line. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch rose to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht had been a leisure craft used first by royalty and later by the burghers for the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, arising as private games. English yachting began with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 bet. Yachting rose as fashionable for the wealthy and royalty, but after that point the fashion did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was instigated around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard organization, and had large naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to a race was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club went on, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by joining with other societies, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to the throne in 1820, it came to be named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing dispute, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continuing location of British yacht racing. The club at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the ascension of George IV. Every member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for large bets were held, and the social life was superlative. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English gained dominance. Sailing was for the most part for fun and reached its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and set a benchmark of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts followed the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the latter half of the 19th century. The craft of bigger yachts was initially largely put upon by the victory of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a syndicate started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and built in today’s sense, with merely a model for an outline. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what such science had previously done for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats had to be individually built, there arose a requirement for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were built. Hence, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. In modern times, one of the rapidly growing areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to standard dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between such boats can be had on an even par with no handicapping necessary. A great example is the standard International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting belonged largely for the royal and the wealthy, money was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The rise and desire of smaller yachts happened in the later half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the hardiness of smaller yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure yachts became more common, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, at which point steam was set to replace sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed increasingly in leisure yachts. Bigger power yachts were progressed to a high element, and long-distance sailing became a favourite activity of the affluent. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to boats powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht archetype for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were exclusively power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the design of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of more than 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service for World War II.

As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were produced, many large yachts were using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, was furthered during World War I. In the decade following that, big power-yacht manufacture grew, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that period the largest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of bigger power yachts fell away after 1932, and the fashion after that was for smaller, less pricey boats. Following World War II, a lot of small naval craft were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting had become a widespread beloved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and maintaining their own small leisure yachts. Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be differentiated by the impact they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that puts the same relative liability on all taxpayers—i.e., when tax liability and income increase in the same proportion. A progressive tax is characterizable by a larger than proportional growth in the tax liability in regard to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognised by a less than proportional increase in the comparable onus. Thus, progressive taxes are seen as fighting a lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes are seen to have the effect of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, could become less so within the upper-income group—in particular if a taxpayer is permitted to reduce his tax base by claiming deductions or by leaving out some certain income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income categories could also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are claimed.

Income measured over the course of a given period does not absolutely give the most appropriate measure of taxpaying status. For example, transitory growth in income could be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer might decide to pay for consumption by decreasing savings. So, if taxation is regarded along with “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than if compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except those on luxuries) are mostly regressive, because the spread of individual income consumed or spent on specific goods decreases as the level of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a set amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

In considering the economic effects of taxation, it is relevant to differentiate between several ideas of tax rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income increases by one dollar. Thus, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates must review provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than nominated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for appraising incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, as it may rely on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates signify the fraction of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates generally grow with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households can swamp these effects, forcing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that lower as income grows.

The Development of Data Projectors

The LCDs used in projection systems are usually small reflective or transmissive panels illuminated by a powerful arc lamp source. A series of lenses magnifies the reflected or transmitted image and sends it onto the screen. For front-projection systems the LCD is placed on the same area of the screen as the viewer, while in rear-projection systems the screen is lit from behind. Projectors of higher cost and performance can use three separate LCD panels, reflecting separate red, green, and blue images that combine to reflect a coloured picture on the screen.

The resultant change in optical properties can cause a change from light to dark if or when one or more polarizers are employed.

SSFLC devices have been produced for large passive-matrix displays, but their expense and complex detail has prevented them from making any particular movement on the market. Small transmissive and reflective active-matrix SSFLC displays, however, display some probability for use as parts in projection systems or as viewfinders in digital cameras. Their fast reaction allows them to be employed in time-sequential colour systems, in which expensive colour filters are removed for a coloured backlight that flashes red, green, and blue in rapid pulsing (approx 100 cycles a second). For example, the liquid crystal may be switched to a transmissive state for the red and green periods then to a nontransmissive state for the blue period, with the upshot that the eye sees an average of red and green light, or the colour yellow.

The History of the Chair

As a camp stool that chair existed during much later times. But the stool also took on the use of a ceremonial seat, its mechanical job as a folding stool neglected or forgotten. This can from evidence be observed, from as early as 1366–57 BC in two stools, crafted in ebony with ivory inlay decoration and gold mounts, from the tomb of Tutankhamen. They are made in the form of folding stools but cannot be folded as the seats are formed with wood. The easy build of the folding stool, consisting of two frames that rotate on metal bolts and bear a seat of leather or fabric fastened between them, appeared but some time later from the Bronze Age folding chairs of Scandinavia and northern Germany. The most well known of those is the folding stool, crafted out of ashwood, found at Guldhøj (National Museum in Copenhagen).

Greece and Rome
The significant Greek chair, the klismos, is found not from any ancient object still extant but as found in a large amount of pictorial objects. The best recognised is the klismos placed on the Hegeso Stele at the Dipylon burial area near Athens (c. 410 BC). The klismos is a chair with a backward-sloping, curved backboard and four curving legs, only two of those legs would be displayed. These odd legs were presumed to be crafted with bent wood and were thus put under a large amount of pressure under the weight of the sitter. The joints fastening the legs to the frame of the seat would have been therefore extremely solid and were particularly denoted.

The Romans embued the Greek style; a number of casts of seated Romans offer evidence of a denser and are a slightly crudely built klismos. Both types, light and heavy, were brought back as part of the Classicist era. The klismos style is found in French Empire chairs, in English Regency, and in particular types of notable originality of Denmark and Sweden from 1800.

China
The ancestry of the chair in China cannot be tracked as far back as the history of the chair in Egypt and Greece. Since the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) an unbroken collection of sketches and works of art was preserved, with images of the inside and exterior of Chinese houses and their furniture. Kept also since the 16th century are a number of chairs made from wood or lacquered wood, that hold an amazing similarity to styles of past chairs.

As were the designs in Egypt, there were two iconic chair forms in China: a chair having four legs and a folding stool. This four-legged chair is found both with or without arms but never without the square seat and straight stiles (upright side supports) to support the back. In one kind, it has been seen, the stiles are delicately curved above the arms in order to conform correctly to the structure of the S-shaped back splat (the basic upright of a back). Together, the three limbs are mortised in the yoke-like top rail. Though the design of the back splat then had an influence on English chairs in the Queen Anne period, wooden pieces that would only to a limited ability reinforce corner joints (and then were loose to top that off) indicate a signature solely to Chinese chairs. The four legs sit through the seat frame, which closes upon the rounded staves. Members are round in section or is given rounded edges—referable perhaps to the bamboo tradition. The seat is not pleasant and occasionally had a plaited form. These chairs required the sitter to hold themselves stiff and upright; for if too much pressure is forced on the back, the chair has a way of falling over. In patriarchal Chinese homes of this era armchairs likely were reserved only for older people, for they were given great respect.

The Chinese folding stool is presumed to have travelled to China from the West. It is akin that much from the Egyptian and Scandinavian folding stools, but it possesses a difference in that the top rail is prettily joined to the two legs of the stool in a curved member, which is more often than not provided with metal mounts. From a Western perspective the resultant effect of both of these furniture styles is stylized. The structure and decorative parts are combined in a style that is all at once naïve and refined. The pieced-together appearance is a result of the way that the individual items do not seem to have been put together with either glue or screws, but have been mortised with one another and fixed in its place in the manner of a Chinese puzzle.

Spain: 17th century
The Golden Age of Spain in the 17th century also put its name on the chair. Works of art project a style of chair with a relatively unrefined wooden frame; a back and seat, nailed on, having only two layers of leather, with horsehair stuffing in between, stitched to bring out a pattern of little pads. The front board and a corresponding board in the back could be folded after unscrewing some tiny iron hooks. Therefore the chair was a portable piece of furniture when traveling which, during the same era, possessed the dignity of a four-legged, high-backed armchair.

The Netherlands: 17th century
A low, square, upholstered type of chair is displayed in engravings of interiors of rich Dutch homes by Abraham Bosse, a French artist, and also in paintings by the Dutch artists Johannes Vermeer and Gerard Terborch. While this kind of chair can also be made in countries in which Dutch styles of interior decoration and Dutch furniture won acclaim, it is not believed that the innovation actually began in The Netherlands. Typically, the legs of the chair will be smooth, round in section, and of slim dimensions; they are sometimes baluster-shaped (vase-shaped) or twisted. It is patently a bourgeois piece of furniture and was made in impressive numbers, as can be seen from one of Abraham Bosse’s engravings, in which a whole row of these chairs lined up along a wall. The form asserts itself by its harmonious proportions and expensive upholstery in gilt leather or fabric edged with fringes.

France and England: 17th and 18th centuries
The French Rococo chair in its most mature style—that was, as developed in Paris around 1750—spread over most of Europe and has been imitated or copied into the mid-20th century. The style owes its popularity to a combination of leisure and elegance. The seat adheres to the human body and allows a relaxed seated position. The back is bow-shaped, the legs curved. Generally the seat and back are upholstered, and there are small upholstered pads covering the armrests. Smooth transitions are made between seat frame, legs, and back disguise all the joints, which are constructed strongly on craftsmanlike methods in spite of the absence of stretchers between the legs.

French Rococo chairs and imitations of them use wood of fairly thick dimensions; but all members are deeply molded, all superfluous wood has been taken away, and more expensive chairs might be further embellished with highly delicate and decorative carvings. The wood could be varnished, stained, painted, or gilded. Silk damask or tapestry is generally used for any upholstery on the seat, back, and armrests; canework is sometimes used as an alternative to upholstery.

English chairs in the 18th century were more variable in design than the French. The French touch for stylistic uniformity, which lead from the aristocratic circles in Paris and Versailles throughout most of France and was popular in many parts of the Continent, had no parallel in England. Prior to 1740, the most commonly used wood was walnut; thereafter, and for the rest of the century, it was mahogany. Walnut, though beautiful in hue, was soft and therefore less suited to wood carving than to rounded, curving forms. Outer surfaces, such as the back and seat frame, were usually veneered. During the walnut period, highly overstuffed armchairs, covered with leather or embroidered material, were also developed. The best upholstery of this period is precisely and firmly modelled and accentuated by braiding or tacks. When imports of mahogany became common, no specifically new chair designs appeared, but the character of the woodwork changed. Mahogany, having a firmer, closer grain, could be cut thinner, which meant that individual parts of the chair could be more slender in shape. Mahogany also lent itself better to carving than walnut. Carving was concentrated more on the arms and back than on the legs, which as a rule were straight and smooth with chamfered (bevelled) edges and molding. There was a wealth of variety in chairback designs, featuring elegant, pierced, vase-shaped splats or two upright posts connected by horizontal slats (ladderback).

Alongside the French Rococo chair and the best English chairs in walnut and mahogany, the stick-back chair was relatively unaffected by the stylistic changes of the day. Originally a medieval form, known, for example, from paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder and still found in mid-20th century in the churches and inns of southern Europe, the stick-back chair (in all of its variations) consists basically of a solid, saddle-shaped seat into which the legs, back staves, and possibly the armrests are directly mortised. This typically peasant form underwent a renewal and a process of refinement in England and America during the 18th century. Under the name Windsor chair (a term that seems to have been used for the first time in 1731) or Philadelphia chair, it became reknowned and was widely distributed throughout the world.

Late 18th to 20th century
Within the Neoclassical period, no basic changes took place in chair forms, but legs became straight and dimensions lighter. Backs in the shape of classical vases replaced the fanciful outlines of the Rococo period. Around 1800, freely executed imitations of Greek and Roman chairs of the klismos type, with curved legs and backrest, appeared. French chairs of the Empire period, executed in dark mahogany and embellished with ornate bronze mounts, created a ponderous effect.

In cheaper products of inferior workmanship, bourgeois chairs of the 19th century carried on the traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries. The only real innovations were the bentwood (wood that has been bent and shaped) chairs in beech that became popular all over the world and were still made in the 20th century. Around 1900 the continental Art Nouveau and Jugendstil styles (French and German styles characterized by organic foliate forms, sinuous lines, and non-geometric forms), and the Arts and Crafts movement in England (established by the English poet and decorator William Morris to reintroduce idealized standards of medieval craftsmanship), gave rise to original chair designs by Eugène Gaillard in France, Henry van de Velde in Belgium, Josef Hoffman in Austria, Antonio Gaudí in Spain, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Scotland. These new furniture styles did not exercise wide, let alone decisive, influence. The Art Nouveau chairs designed by the French architect Hector Guimard, for example, are collector’s pieces, but his name is known to a broader public only because of his fanciful entrances to the Paris Métro.

Modern
After World War I, the Bauhaus school in Germany became a creative centre for revolutionary thinking, resulting, for example, in tubular steel chairs designed by the architects Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and others. During World War II, the aircraft industry accelerated the development of laminated wood and molded plastic furniture. The dominant chair forms of this period go back to designs by Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, and Charles and Ray Eames. Rapid technical developments, in conjunction with an ever-increasing interest in human-factors engineering, or ergonomics, suggest that completely new chair forms will probably be evolved in the future.

Jet Power and the Birth of the Jet Aviation Age

The invention of jet propulsion was ideal for fighter aircraft. Although at first it reduced range and endurance and often increased the take-off run. The German Messerschmitt Me 262 and the British Gloster Meteor twin jets saw action in 1944, together with the tailless Me 163 rocket interceptor which sacrificed range and endurance for astounding climb and speed in defending local areas against heavy bombers.

Germany was far in front of other countries in another factor too: armament. A range of 30 mm (1 inch) cannon, radically new high-speed cannon with multiple-revolver chambers, very large recoilless guns, spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets fired in salvoes, and wire-guided air-to-air missiles were all under test before the Luftwaffe s defeat. They gradually inspired similar developments in other countries: one German gun, the Mauser MG 213, led to the American Pontiac M-39, the French DEFA, the Russian NR-30, the Swiss Oerlikon KCA, and the British Aden, all of which are still in use.

Many early jet fighters were fitted into more or less conventional airframes. The fighter often considered the ultimate achievement of the piston era, the long-range North American P-51 Mustang appeared both in a twinned double-fuselage form and, with few changes, as a US Navy jet.

But the US Air Force decided to wait a year until its makers could sweep back the wings and tail at 35 degrees, which German research had shown could lead to higher speed. The result was the F-86 Sabre, which in 1948 set a speed record at 1,080 km/h (671 mph) and outflew all other fighters. Later versions carried radar and rockets and reached 1,150 km/h (715 mph).

During the Korean War (1950-3) the F-86 met a previously unknown machine built in the Soviet Union, the somewhat lighter and simpler MiG-15, and although the MiG could climb higher and had heavy cannon, the Sabre’s skilled pilots and better equipment gave it the edge in combat.

North American’s next fighter was the F-100 Super Sabre, which exceeded the speed of sound in level flight. The MiG bureau built the twin jet MiG-19, which was even faster, and is still in wide use. The US Air Force ordered various all-weather interceptors with largely automatic radar and flight control systems so that, with guided missiles, they could intercept and destroy enemy aircraft without the pilot ever seeing them.

The British ordered a jet-fighter flying-boat, but discovered that this way of doing business without airfields yielded an inferior fighter. The Americans suffered similar problems with a ‘hydroski’ fighter, which could dive faster than sound, but took off and landed on retractable water skis.

Two even stranger fighters were designed around powerful turboprop engines and, standing on their tails, screwed themselves vertically into the air (they were intended to operate from the confined decks of warships or merchant vessels). Britain built high-altitude supersonic fighters with ‘mixed power’ from a turbojet and a rocket. In 1957 the British Minister of Defence suggested there would soon be no more manned fighters at all, only missiles. The Americans stuck to fighters, but made them very large and armed them with missiles, but no gun.

Today the wheel has turned full circle. In the past 10 to 20 years there has been a powerful wish to get back to the ‘eyeball-to-eyeball’ type of confrontation of the man in the Sopwith Camel. The pre-eminent Western fighter, the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, was rebuilt with an internal gun, a rapid-fire 20 mm (0.79 in) cannon with six barrels firing up to 6,000 rds/ min, and a slatted wing to pull tighter turns in combat.

New small fighters appeared, such as the General Dynamics F-16, which, although bigger and heavier than any single-engined fighters of World War II, are nevertheless small and light by comparison with such impressive machines as the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle, and MiG-25 Foxbat, The RAF’s next interceptor, the ADV (Air-Defence Version) of the Panavia Tornado, is a careful midway compromise, smaller than the three monsters just listed, but with two engines, long range, powerful radar, and extremely effective Skyflash missiles.

Modern interceptors defend vast blocks of airspace up to 160 km (100 miles) in radius, with powerful radar able to look down at the surrounding land and water and spot low-flying intruders trying to slip through the defences unnoticed. Their task is eased by the presence of special surveillance, early-warning, and AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft, with enormous radars and sophisticated command and control systems to manage all a nation’s defences in the most efficient way.
