The tensile-strength test is basically futile; in the process of collecting data, the sample is wasted. Although this is not a problem when a plentiful store of the sample is at hand, nondestructive methods are safer for materials that are costly or hard to make up or that have been formed into finished or semifinished products.

Liquids

One common nondestructive method, employed to detect surface cracks and imperfections in metal samples, requires a penetrating liquid, which needs to be brightly coloured or fluorescent. After being smeared on the surface of the metal and allowed to impress into any small flaws, the fluid is cleared, leaving readily perceptible markings and weaknesses. An analogous method, better for nonmetals, requires an electrically charged liquid pasted on the sample surface. After the extra liquid is rubbed off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed onto the material and sinks into the cracks. Neither of these techniques, however, can identify internal breaks.

Radiation

Internal, as well as external weaknesses, can be found through the use of X-ray or gamma-ray machines in which the radiation passes through the material and impresses on an ideal photographic film. Occasionally, it is possible to nominate the X rays on a particular section within the sample, allowing a 3-dimensional description of the flaw identity as well as its location.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of parts takes transmission of sound waves above human hearing range through the sample. By the reflection method, a sound wave is transmitted over one area of the subject, reflected with the opposite area, and signalled to a receiver that is located at the starting side. Upon isolating a mark or failure in the sample, the signal is reflected and its traveling time disrupted. The actual delay then becomes a measure of the location of the imperfection; a map of the sample can then be made to locate the area and shape of the weaknesses. By the through-transmission technique, the transmitter and receiver are started on opposite ends of the sample; delays in the signal of sound waves are used to target and measure imperfections. More often than not a water medium is employed through the use of which transmitter, sample, and receiver will be immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic aspects of a object are largely shown by its overall shape, magnetic methods can be employed to demonstrate the location and indicative geometry of weaknesses and breaks. By magnetic testing, an apparatus is used that consists of a big measure of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Held within the larger object is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is connected an electrical measuring tool. The steady current in the initial coil causes electrical current to flow through the secondary coil through the technique of induction. When an iron sample is inserted in the secondary coil, acute changes in the further current can signal marks in the rod. This process only isolates changes between sections along the length of a rod and does not find long or continuous flaws that easily. A similar technique, making use of eddy currents induced by a primary coil, also should be utilized to find imperfections and breaks. A steady current is induced in the test item. Cracks that are found across the track of the current make for resistance of the test piece; this determination should be measured under appropriate items.

Infrared

Infrared methods have sometimes been used to find material continuity in intricate construction situations. While testing the value of adhesive joins in the sandwich core and facing sheets in a ordinary sandwich structure item such as plywood, for example, heat is applied to the face of the sandwich skin object. Where bond lines are continuous, those core samples allow a heat depression for the surface object, and the general temperatures of the skin should spread lightly on these bond lines. Where that bond line appears to be too small, missing, or in error, however, localised temperature does not adapt. Infrared photography of the front shall then show the location and shape of the erroneous adhesive. A similar method utilizes thermal coatings that can change colour upon reaching a determined degree.

Conclusively, nondestructive procedures also are being shown to permit a whole determination of the mechanical elements of a test object. Ultrasonics and thermal methods appear most valuable in this instance.
